“Thanks for helping me with my presentation today, Yara.”

“No problem,” Yara said. “What’s the presentation about anyway?”

“I invented a jetpack that’s also a grass cutter,” said Frankie. She pressed her finger to the console and started the shuttle car. They were on their way to Frankie’s school, and Jocelyn had asked Frankie to take the shuttle with the bed-and-breakfast’s logo on the side for extra advertising. “It uses the grass clippings it cuts as energy for the jetpack. It can even compress the grass clippings into batteries that can be used in other devices.”

“That’s amazing,” said Yara, impressed. She couldn’t hide her worried look from Frankie. “And I’m supposed to wear it, right?”

“Yeah.”

“You sure I won’t go zooming off?”

Frankie laughed. “No, I promise. I’ll have it set to remote control, and I’ll be the one in control of it.”

“And you won’t send me zooming around the room for giggles?”

Frankie giggled. “I promise.” An amiable silence settled between them before Frankie spoke again. “I still can’t believe you’re from the past.” Frankie had taken the news about Yara being from the past a lot more easily than Kit had. Then Frankie chuckled.

“What?”

“My dad was such a pain when I was working on that jetpack at home. He told me I couldn’t work on it when he was around. That’s why I’ve been forced to build it at school.” Frankie shook her head. “If he found out about you, I think he’d literally explode.”

Yara bit her lip in concern. “Why is he so afraid of technology? I’ve always wanted to know.”

Frankie shrugged, guiding them along the street. It dawned on Yara that Frankie was deliberately avoiding taking the MAP. Maybe she too was afraid of the breakneck speed required to drive there.

“I don’t know. He’s always caught up in one conspiracy theory or another. Mom thought this one with the fear of technology would be temporary, like the others, so she played along at the start, but he held on to the fear this time.” Frankie gnawed on her upper lip. “He’s just always been an anxious man. You have to have patience with him. Sometimes his theories are really out there. Strange. Like, one time, he believed the world was flat!”

“Yeah, in 2017, there are—were—people who believed that too.”

A strange feeling went through Yara to refer to 2017 as a long-ago time, even if it were true. Except for the rare few who had lived to over a hundred years old, just about everybody who was alive in 2017, were most assuredly dead now.

They were driving along in silence, when Frankie broke it.

“So, are you dating my brother?”

“What?” Yara sat up straighter. Just the mention of Kit brought the memory of their brief kiss from two nights ago. She’d been having a devil of a time not thinking about that kiss. Or even about what would have happened if Frankie hadn’t interrupted. “No, we’re not dating.”

“Looks like you two were having a moment before I came in.” Frankie made a face. “Sorry about that by the way.
